Jesse Emma Hall was born to James Madison Hall and Mary Prosser Hall on 17 June 1850 in Baldwin Co Ga. She was one of 13 children. She married Henry Jordon Hodges of Sandersville Ga on 15 December 1872. She died 21 May 1926 in Washington Co Ga. She was a sister to my grandfather Alonzo Hall. THE REVEREND JAMES MADISON HALL JR AND WIFE

MY GRANDFATHER'S BROTHER JAMES JR.

The Reverend James Madison Hall Jr was born in 1845 to James M Hall and Mary Prosser Hall in Baldwin Co GA. He served as a Baptist minister and in his later years he served four churches, preaching at a different church each Sunday of the month. He attended a seminar at Mercer University as a part of his studies. He realized he needed more training to improve his skills as a minister and enrolled at Mercer in the fall of 1886. He was much older than the other students but was accepted and liked as a fellow student. Even though his health was not good, he continued to be active until a week before his death in Macon GA on 13 November 1886. There were many obituaries and tributes published in his honor. Copies are available from the Special Collections section of the Mercer U Library Macon GA. His wife Jane Elizabeth Medlin Hall and their children Alvah Donald Hall and Mary Elizabeth Hall survived him. He is buried in the cemetary at Black Springs Baptist Church, Baldwin Co GA.

MY FATHER SAMUEL WILKES HALL

The photo above is of my father Samuel Wilkes Hall taken in October of 1899. He was nine months old. He lived in Lincoln and later Talladega Al with his parents Alonzo and Lula Wilkes Hall. Samuel was born 13 January 1899. His grandparents were The Reverend Washington Usher Wilkes and Mary Lamar Wilkes of Sylacauga Al and James Madison Hall and Mary Prosser Hall of Baldwin Co Ga.

MY GRANDMOTHER LULA WILKES HALL

This is a photo of my grandmother Lula Wilkes Hall, wife to Alonzo Hall. Her parents were The Reverend Washington Usher Wilkes and Mary Lamar Wilkes. She was born in June of 1864 and died in February of 1933 in Talladega Ala. She lived in Sylacauga Ala with her parents when she met and married Alonzo Hall. He was a widower with two children, Mamie Lucille Hall and Lyman Hall. She and Alonzo had two children, Myrtle and Samuel Wilkes Hall. Lula was a graduate of a music conservatory in Cincinatti Ohio. She enjoyed teaching piano to students in her home. Music was a life long joy to her. Her daughter Myrtle was a graduate of Judson College as a voice major. Samuel graduated from Howard College in Birmingham Ala. He majored in Latin and minored in Greek. He was an excellent tennis player and enjoyed the sport for many years.

Lula and Alonzo lived in Sylacauga where he taught English, near Lincoln Ala where he taught English, and in Talladega Ala where he was employed by the US Postal Service.

MY GRANDFATHER ALONZO HALL

Life and Times of Joseph Alonzo Hall

Joseph Alonzo Hall or Alonzo Joseph Hall was born in Baldwin County Georgia near Milledgeville on 20 March 1853. His parents were James Madison Hall and Mary A Prosser. They married 29 December 1831 in Milledgeville GA. James Madison’s parents were Benjamin Hall and Rebekah Brantley Hall. All were farmers in Baldwin County Georgia. Alonzo Hall was the ninth child of the 13 children born to James and Mary. His grandfather Benjamin died years before Alonzo was born and only his three older brothers benefited from his estate. So in the years 1876-1877 he taught school in Tenille Ga just outside Sandersville, Washington Co Ga. This was the county adjoining Baldwin Co. In 1877 he enrolled in Mercer College in Macon Ga as a sophomore. He was a prize winning declamation student and was on the honor roll. By January of 1879 he had accepted a job offer to teach in Sylacauga, Talladega County Alabama. He taught English and lived with the family of Dr. David C Keller and wife Marie. The family had several other boarders who lived in their home. Alonzo married their daughter Mamie Keller on 22 June 1882 in Sylacauga Al. They had two children Lyman and Mamie Lucille who were half-brother and sister to my father Samuel. Mamie died. Alonzo married Lula Wilkes on 8 October 1889 in Sylacauga Al. Lula was the daughter of the Reverend Washington Usher Wilkes, a Baptist minister and Mary Lamar Wilkes of Sylacauga. In1900 Alonzo was teaching English Literature in Lincoln, Talladega County, Al. The family lived on a farm on the Coosa River. The farm was paid for. By then Lula and Alonzo had two children of their own, Myrtle born 16 January 1891 died 1 June 1979 and Samuel born 13 January 1899 in Lincoln Al died 11 February 1992. According to the 1900 US Census, the household was “Alonzo, Lula, Mamie Lucille, Lyman, Myrtle, Samuel and an aunt of Lula’s, Mattie Lamar”. With so many people to support, Alonzo took a job in Talladega Al with the US Postal Service. He was a rural mail carrier. They lived in a house (owned) at 307 Brignoli Street and the house is still occupied at this date. Myrtle married Tom Mabry and had two children who both died at birth. Myrtle was a graduate of Judson College and was a voice major. Samual was a graduate of Howard College, now Samford University. Lula was a graduate of a music conservatory in Ohio and taught piano lessons in her home. The family attended the Baptist church. They truly believed in education.Lula Wilkes Hall died February 1933 in Talladega. Alonzo retired from the Postal Service in 1920 and died 11 November 1938 at home.His daughter Myrtle died 1 June 1979 in Talladega. She was a widow for many years and lived in the family home on Brignoli Street until she moved to a nursing home in her later years.His son Samuel Wilkes Hall located in Charlotte NC after graduating from college. He married Thelma Josephine Suttle 16 August 1927 at Dilworth Methodist Church. Their wedding was the first to be held in the new sanctuary. Sam and a classmate Claude Carr and some friends established The Carolina Sporting Goods Company in Charlotte. The company was sold to Wilson Sporting Goods early in the 1930s due to the economic depression. Sam continued to work there until about 1946. He then was employed as an office manager for several textile companies and retired about 1971.Sam died 11 February 1992 in Charlotte NC. Thelma died 21 January 1991 at home 827 Montford Drive. They were both active members of Forest Hills Presbyterian Church. Sam and Thelma are buried at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte NC.Their children were Anne Hamilton Hall born 1930 and son Wilkes Suttle Hall born 1934. He died June 25 2001 in Charlotte NC. He is buried with his parents at Sharon Memorial Park. Anne Hamilton married Eugene Simpson Todd on 25 June 1955 at First Methodist Church in Charlotte. Their two children are Susan Diana Hamilton Todd and Eric Winston Alexander Todd.

MY GREAT GRANDFATHER THE REVEREND WASHINGTON USHER WILKES

This is a photo of The Reverend Washington Usher Wilkes. He was my paternal great grandfather. He was born 22 March 1822 in Marlboro Co SC. He married Mary Lanier Lamar in 1854. He died 23 Nov 1894 in Cullman AL. His wife Mary was born in AL about 1827 to John Lamar and Martha Dubose Lamar. They were French Hugenaut. Washington Wilkes was the son of Elias Wilkes and Hannah Usher Wilkes. He was a Baptist minister.Their children were James L, Sadie O, Lula, Judson, Mary H, John D, Thomas I. James married Jennie Harris. Sadie married J T Brown. My grandmother Lula married Alonzo Hall. Judson married Essie Powell. Mary married a Mr Crosland and later a Mr Dillard.
